WHAT IS ROCK CORING?

Rock coring is a drilling method used to retrieve intact cylindrical samples of bedrock for classification, logging, and laboratory testing. Unlike soil borings that terminate at bedrock, rock coring advances through the rock to provide a continuous record of bedrock conditions at depth.

MAK Drilling performs rock coring for projects requiring bedrock depth confirmation, geologic characterization, corrosion and durability assessment, and subsurface investigations where rock quality and continuity are critical.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

NQ, HQ, and PQ diamond core drilling
Bedrock identification and top-of-rock confirmation
Core logging and field classification

Rock quality designation (RQD) documentation
Corrosion and durability assessment support
Geologic characterization

Integration with soil boring programs

WHO WE WORK WITH

Rock coring supports geotechnical engineers designing deep foundations or evaluating bearing conditions in rock, structural engineers and bridge designers requiring bedrock data, environmental consultants assessing fractured rock conditions, and project owners on sites where subsurface rock conditions are unknown or variable.

ROCK CORING ACROSS THE MIDWEST

Bedrock depths across the Midwest vary significantly by location. In some areas, rock is encountered within the first few feet of drilling. In others, deep glacial deposits overlie bedrock at significant depth.

MAK Drilling’s crews are experienced with the regional geology and equipped to transition from soil boring to rock coring efficiently when conditions require it.
